Yoga for Osteoporosis Workshop
Yoga can do what no medicine does:
· Balance
· Range of Motion
· Strength
· Coordination
· Confidence
History
The 6-session workshop is based on 12 poses that were used in a 10-year pilot study involving individuals with an average age of 68. Dr. Loren Fishman, the medical director of Manhattan Physical Medicine, has done extensive research on yoga and osteoporosis. This study found that not only did the participants not lose bone, but they gained bone. The study is ongoing and these postures continue to help build bone and even reverse the disease
Philosophy
Further studies showed that a formula of alignment, duration, and intensity when doing the 12 poses was key to inducing and enhancing the bone-building properties of each pose.
Postures
Tree, Triangle, Warrior II, Side Angle, Revolved Triangle, Locust, Bridge, Supine Hand to Foot I, Supine Hand to Foot II, Straight-Legged Twist, Bent-Knee Twist and Corpse
Anatomy
Understanding how our body works is the best way to avoid injury. Learning to move from informed knowledge of your body will give the student confidence and resilience.
Intelligent Sequencing
As many of these poses are asymmetrical, keeping the sacrum in alignment and free from pain is one of the unique aspects of the workshop. Attention is given to how to keep the spine and sacrum safe.
Pranayama
Pranayama is breath awareness. Breath is a powerful tool. Learning to breathe properly and let the breath lead the movement in and out of poses is one more way to avoid injury.
Tuition is $125
